First, determine the state of the tree

Step 1 - the degree of absorbency:

Before proceeding with the processing of painted wood, you should make sure that the old coating does not prevent the new material from adhering to the surface and penetrating deeply. To do this, spray some parts of the wooden surface with water and watch how soon the moisture is absorbed.

If the wood has absorbed all the spray in less than 10 minutes, a fresh coat can be applied. Otherwise, the old coating will need to be removed.

Step 2 - preparation and restoration:

Before applying a new coat of stain to the painted surface, use Wolman DeckStrip to remove any remaining hydrophobic stain and all visible pigments from the old coating.

Treat painted wood according to the instructions on the Wolman DeckStrip® Stain & Finish Remover label. If the wood has residues of clear sealer varnish or gray spots of mildew and mildew, there are two options to choose from.

For horizontal and vertical surfaces: Airless spray or pump spray without aluminum parts will work.

Wolman DeckStrip Application Instructions

The first stage is the replacement of damaged boards and elements. Then remove all dirt and sweep out the dust. Sprinkle grass and plants with water.

It is better to remove standing water, and cover all aluminum parts to protect from mortar. If the wood is hot in the sun, you can cool it down by wiping it down with a damp cloth.

Weather

For wood processing, it is better to choose cloudy, dry weather. Optimum temperature is 16-32 ° C (50-90 ° F). The sun's rays should not fall on the surface, otherwise the DeckStrip solution will evaporate ahead of time.

Application

Step 1 - preparation

Shake the container lightly, then gently pour the solution into the spray container. If you will be working with a roller or brush, a bucket with a volume of 8-10 liters is suitable for the solution. In no case do not mix the product with other drugs.

Step 2 - application

Moisten the surface and apply the solution evenly in 2 sq. m (20 sq. ft.). Let the solution dry for 15 minutes. Apply an additional coat if necessary.

Step 3 - removal

Take a stiff, short-haired synthetic brush (Wolman WOODWORX® Deck Brush will do) and scrub the wood surface for a couple of minutes.

Another method: pressure wash. Use a 40 ° nozzle with a pressure of 1.500-2.500 PSI for hardwood and timber. 500-1,000 PSI - for cedar and mahogany. Move evenly along the grain.

Step 4 - flush

After brushing, rinse the surface with a hose with maximum water pressure. After drying, the wood should be clean and bright, without stains and remnants of the old coating.

The procedure (from 2 to 4 steps) should be repeated in each of the areas until complete processing. Upon completion, it is recommended to rinse the surrounding plants with water.

Tip: After rinsing, tanning spots may appear on the surface of cedar, exotic hardwood and mahogany. This darkens the wood noticeably. The Wolman Deck & Fence Brightener liquid concentrate will help restore the wood to its natural shade. DeckStrip is not designed to combat tannin stains.

The optimal number of layers is one. You need to withstand it for 15 minutes. Problem areas can be treated twice.

Attention: The surface may be slippery after wetting. Move with caution.

In private houses, in summer cottages, and often in apartments, wooden products are used, such as doors, windows, floor coverings, gazebos, pieces of furniture and decor parts. And no matter how magnificent the wood is in its original form, due to the constant influence of external factors and time, it gradually loses its consumer qualities and attractiveness. What to do in such a situation? The answer is very simple: if you want to preserve the natural structure and appearance wood for many years, stain will help you.

What is wood stain

What is wood stain - this is a liquid with a special composition that is able to preserve wood, protect it, and give it the necessary color (tint) if necessary.

Interesting!
Typically, the stain has colors that can effectively mimic the noble wood species.
But, if your interior requires multi-colored toning, this is also possible.

An essential difference between stains and enamels and paints is its deep penetration into the structure of wood and staining "from the inside". Thus, the wood retains its natural grain pattern and texture. Also, an opaque layer (film) does not form on the surface of the product, as in the case of processing with paints and varnishes.

In addition to the aesthetic functions that give the wood an attractive and noble appearance, the stain is intended for practical purposes such as protecting wood from:

  • Wet environment.
  • Solar exposure.
  • Reproduction of fungi and bacteria.

By using such a tool, you can extend the life of a wooden surface tenfold.

There are several types of wood stains, differing in their base. It is necessary to choose exactly the one that is most suitable in your case, based on what time frame you are facing and what result you expect. Naturally, each type has its pluses and minuses, which is why it is necessary to consider this issue in more detail.

Water based stain

Such a stain is sold in special stores already in a ready-to-use composition, or in powder form. Do-it-yourself powder stain for wood is diluted with warm water, immediately before processing. Coating intensity will ultimately depend on the proportions of water and powder.

Important!
After you mix the powder with water, be sure to strain the liquid to prevent undissolved dye particles from falling on the wood!

In addition, using such a composition, you will not have a question about how to remove the stain from a wooden surface. Well, if this question nevertheless arose, then the excess composition can simply be washed off with water, soaked with a cloth or cotton swab.

One of the advantages of water stain is the absence of a sharp specific odor. Therefore, it is often used for indoor work, and this mixture also perfectly tints wood, emphasizing the natural pattern.

Note!
This composition dries out within twelve hours, during this time the painted product should not be touched, transferred to a room with a different temperature and humidity.

If we talk about the disadvantages of such tinting, then we can highlight its effect on the wood fibers. She lifts them, because of which, after the wood dries, the surface may turn out to be rough and poorly protected from a damp environment.

However, this can be fixed in two ways:

  • After the composition is dry, sand the surface.
  • Moisten the surface with water and let it raise the fibers, and after drying, apply the stain to the wood.

So, the main advantages of water-based stains:

  • Ease of removal with water.
  • Safety.
  • Large selection of palette.

The main disadvantages include:

  • Raising wood fibers.
  • The need for subsequent, to avoid the appearance of cracks.

Alcohol based stain

The name itself suggests that such a stain has a base of alcohol (denatured alcohol) or a special solvent.

Just like a water-based product, it is produced in the form of a ready-made composition or in powder form, which will have to be dissolved on its own. The price of alcohol stain will be higher than water based stain.
