Let's get started!

1. First, we make a sketch of the person’s face for whom we will make a mask. To do this, we should take a regular bag and newspaper cut into strips. We put a bag on the face, make holes for the nostrils and eyes. Then, moisten the newspaper a little with water, apply it to your face. Apply about three layers, then let the paper dry.

2. After the paper has dried, we continue to glue several more layers, now we will use paper of higher density.

3. After drying, you can remove our workpiece and continue working. Trim the edges of the mask to give it shape.

Do not cut off a lot of paper at once, do it gradually so that the mask does not deteriorate.

4. We cover the entire surface with fabric to avoid delamination.

5. Cover the front side with putty. After drying, we clean and paint.

6. The mask is almost ready, all that remains is to do the decoration. Here you can create, invent and do everything to your taste!

VIDEO. How to make a mask out of paper?

This master class describes step by step how to make a papier-mâché mask with your own hands.

The lesson is designed for beginners, as it does not contain complex decor or professional painting. A frame is used as the final decoration, so the end result is a beautiful panel that is ideal for a gift or home decor. As decoration, you can take ready-made flowers or make them yourself from foamiran, guipure or paper.

Materials and tools

In order not to be distracted by small things while working and not to look for what you need, prepare everything you need in advance.

Materials you will need:

  • PVA glue (thick);
  • white printer paper;
  • any vegetable or mineral oil or petroleum jelly;
  • newspaper;
  • cotton fabric;
  • white wood putty;
  • white paint (aerosol);
  • clear varnish (aerosol);
  • paints for design;
  • drapery fabric;
  • background material;
  • frame and artificial flowers to decorate the panel.

To form a mask, you need a plastic face base; such papier-mâché blanks are sold in a craft store.

You will also need:

  • cup of water (1-2 pcs.);
  • oilcloth or large bag;
  • stationery knife;
  • sandpaper coarse-grained or medium-grained and the finest-grained;
  • stapler;
  • glue gun with glue sticks.

If you have never done the proposed needlework, before you start making a papier-mâché mask, study. The intricacies of the work and possible difficulties are described in more detail there.

Mold making technique

Spread the oilcloth. Tear the printer sheets, newspaper and cotton cloth into pieces and set everything aside separately.

Place the printed paper in a cup of water and let it dry thoroughly.

Spread the base with oil to make the craft easier to separate from the surface.

When making a papier-mâché mask with your own hands, it is important to observe sequence of layers:

  1. Paper.
  2. Newspaper.
  3. Textile.
  4. Paper.
  5. Newspaper.
  6. Textile.
  7. Paper.

Different types of paper are important for even coverage. If it is of the same type, then during the work you may not notice that some places are empty, and in other areas there is a layering. The fabric layer is necessary to give greater strength to the frame.

Start placing the wet white paper pieces onto the prepared base. Try avoid empty spaces so that in the future they do not show through, and the next layers of papier-mâché, which will be bonded with glue, do not stick to the mask.

Add thick PVA glue to a cup of water until it reaches the consistency of thick cream.

Add pieces of newspaper to the cup with the diluted glue and let it soak a little, two minutes will be enough.

Start applying the second layer. It's no longer scary if you layer the paper. It will stick together and will not interfere with the separation of papier-mâché from the mask.

The third layer of papier-mâché will be fabric. Add the material to a cup of glue and water. Keep posting.

Then layer the white pieces again. And so on until there are seven of them.

Set the craft aside in a dry place to harden for 2-3 days. Please note that you cannot make a papier-mâché mask with your own hands in a day. You will need to leave the work to dry several times.

Applying putty and sanding

Inspect the paper and fabric papier-mâché blank and make sure it is completely dry. Trim off any uneven edges with a utility knife. Special attention pay attention to the holes.

Separate the papier-mâché from the plastic mask. It should come off easily and not become deformed. Place it back on the plastic base. This point is very important, because if it is done at the very end of the work, when the putty is applied, the putty may crack.

Now that the paper-fabric base is prepared, proceed to applying the putty.

The layer should not be too thick, otherwise it may crack when drying. To make sanding and polishing the surface easier in the future, smooth the putty with your hands dipped in water.

Leave the papier-mâché mask to dry. In no case do not dry with a hairdryer or near a radiator, since this disrupts the crystallization process.

No earlier than 24 hours later, apply a second layer of putty in the same way and leave until completely dry for at least two days.

Decorating a Venetian mask

Once the base is completely dry, remove it from the plastic base again and put it back in place.

Now start sanding and polishing. To do this, you will need sandpaper, which can be purchased at any hardware store. Sanding should be done from sandpaper with a larger grit to a smaller one.

The result should be a smooth papier-mâché blank for the Venetian mask, as in the photo.

Take white spray paint and apply it to the surface. Spray outdoors or in another room, because the aerosol can damage furniture.

Distribute the paint evenly and do not try to cover the entire surface at once. If you overdo it with the quantity, smudges may appear. It is better to carry out this procedure again as needed. Then set the craft aside until completely dry.

The beautiful Venetian papier-mâché mask is almost ready. Decide on the finishing decor and materials for decoration.

Take any design paints and start drawing.

Secure the result with clear varnish from a can. In this form, the Venetian mask can be used for its intended purpose. But if you are not going to the carnival in Venice, then make a wall panel for yourself or as a gift.

How to make an original panel

To decorate a panel with a Venetian mask according to our master class, prepare a frame and a cardboard background. Cover the cardboard with fabric and secure with a regular stapler. Make sure that the staples do not peek out from under the frame itself. Try to attach closer to the edge.

Create a composition and finally decide on the location of the central figure.

Use a glue gun to attach the mask to the background. Add flowers and drapery fabric around it, following the photo.

This is such a beautiful decor! Caring for papier-mâché is easy; carefully remove dust with a dry microfiber cloth or fluffy cleaning brush.

Instructions

Make the base for the mask. It should follow the shape of your face. For this, it is most convenient to use sculptural plasticine. Knead it in your hands and roll it into a “pancake”. Place it on your face and use your fingers to mold it to match the contours of your face, Special attention focusing on the area around the nose and on. Determine the size of the open area around the eyes.

Apply the next layers with PVA glue and take 15-20 minute breaks after every 2 layers. The optimal thickness of papier-mâché for a mask is 6-8 layers.

Remove the finished mask from the plasticine mold and trim the edges with scissors. Make holes for the ribbons along the edges and secure them.

Cover the mask acrylic paint. You can use regular one, but it is short-lived, it will fade and blur from accidental moisture.

The base color is easier to apply from a spray can, and when it dries, paint with a thin brush in the color you like and matches your costume. Decorate the mask with feathers, lace, and sequins.

Rubber masks are an indispensable part of any costume at a costume party. Today, masks depict characters from favorite cartoons and horror films; they are used as part of the image by some artists, especially rock singers, comedians, and animators.

You will need

  • two-component rubber for casting flexible silicone molds, type Pentalast -720, plasticine, brush, Vaseline, container for stirring glue, rubber gloves.

Instructions

Make a mold of the shape of your chosen character from plasticine. First you need to fit it, then mold it as closely as possible in relation to your size. Typically, rubber masks are worn over the entire head or have a slit at the back for ease of use.

Cover the made plasticine mold with a separator - technical petroleum jelly. Combine the glue components in the container, mix thoroughly, make sure that no air bubbles form. Compound (two-component) from a base paste and a catalyst-hardener. Strictly follow the mixing proportions described on the packaging. Mix until the hardener is completely dissolved. Better in small portions.

Using a brush, apply a thin layer of the prepared two-component mixture onto the mask shape. Wait until the air bubbles disappear and the rubber begins to harden. Mix another portion of paste and hardener.

Cover the mask shape with several layers of two-component rubber. Make sure that the last layer is applied especially carefully and carefully.

Wait for the mask to dry for approximately 24 hours. Then, using a sharp knife, cut holes in it for the eyes, nose, and mouth. Paint mask paints, glue additional elements to it (if necessary). Make a slit in the back of the mask and remove it from the blank.

put on mask It will be possible in 72 hours. Before first use, wash mask in warm water and soap.

Helpful advice

Do not wear the mask for more than 2 hours at a time. Rubber does not allow air to pass through, so the skin of the face may sweat, resulting in acne and diaper rash.

A new word in the use of silicone is hair cosmetics, which successfully competes with the lamination procedure, which costs a lot of money. Freely sold silicone masks and hair drops allow you to use them yourself at home.

Silicone cosmetics are capable of enveloping each hair with a film, which should smooth out damaged areas of the hair and protect them from injury. The use of these products maintains hair elasticity, provides necessary nutrition and hydration, hair looks healthy, vibrant, voluminous, easy to style and comb.

Silicone is a polymer that consists of silicone and oxygen and is a completely synthetic compound.

Silicone mask

Silicone hair mask is produced in several containers from 100 to 1000 ml. It is more profitable and economical to purchase large volumes. The purpose of silicone cosmetics is more decorative than medicinal. If you have healthy and healthy skin, then there is no need to take such radical measures to add additional beauty and attractiveness.

Before using a silicone mask, you need to wash and dry your hair naturally, without a hair dryer. Then apply a little product to your hair. Distribute it over the entire length of the hair using massage movements. After 10 minutes, rinse with warm water. Experts recommend periodically, but not very often, leaving the mask on for a little longer. To create a sauna effect, you can put a polyethylene cap on your head or wrap it in a towel. This will allow all the components of the mask to better penetrate the scalp, enhancing the effect.

Silicone drops

Using silicone hair drops is much easier and more convenient. They are produced in small bottles. Rub a few drops of product into your palms and run through your hair. With this method, you can treat specifically damaged areas of hair, or you can apply the drug to the entire length of the hair. This is very convenient for split ends of hair. There is no need to apply drops all over your head.

There is no need to wash your hair after this treatment. The big advantage of silicone cosmetics is the fact that it is suitable for all hair types. It is recommended to use it at least twice a week. To get a greater effect, it is better to use silicone cosmetics together with quality shampoo, which is suitable for your hair type.

Silicone is well compatible with human cells, does not cause allergic reactions, is not able to penetrate the body, and therefore cannot cause various diseases.

But cosmetics have one small drawback. Both drops and masks have a very specific smell. There is also an opinion among experts that silicone is not completely washed out of the hair. For example, when painting after silicone, the color may not match the expected result. Many hairdressers are against silicone cosmetics. They believe that silicone is able to block the penetration of active substances contained in special shampoos into the depths of the hair.

Tip 6: DIY openwork mask: a spectacular addition festive look

A weightless lace half mask easily turns any girl into the fatal star of a party. Mystery is always attractive and such an accessory would be appropriate both at a carnival or costume party, and during romantic dinner. Making an openwork mask with your own hands is very simple, and there will always be a reason to wear it and spend an unusual evening.

If you are lucky enough to be a participant in the upcoming carnival party, then you should think about the costume in advance. You can choose from ready-made options - fortunately, today this should not be a problem, or you can take advantage of the moment and create your own masterpiece yourself. Let's start with a mask, which is easily made from papier-mâché, and also with your own hands!

Making a cute papier-mâché mask with your own hands

For the base of a carnival mask you will need simple components:

  • Newspaper (or any other paper that gets wet but doesn't turn into a liquid paste)
  • Napkins (paper towel)
  • A piece of cotton fabric or writing paper
  • PVA glue (or hand-welded paste)
  • Tools: scissors, brushes
  • Vaseline or fatty cream
  • As well as decor for decoration (fabric for the base, beads, sequins, ribbons, lace, feathers. You can be inspired by the example of the decor of a classic Venetian mask)

Before the stage of creating a product from papier mache, you need to acquire a base with which it will be convenient to make a cast. Of the possible ready-made options, perhaps the most successful would be a hockey mask. Its shape has been polished over the years and there is no doubt that after taking the impression, the homemade mask will fit on the face like a glove, and the eye sockets will not end up in the nose area.

But you don’t always have a hockey player’s mask lying around at hand. To be precise, for most people this is rare. We will use the option of making a mask based on our own face. Using a half mask as an example, let's see how this is done.

But first, let's check all the materials and tools. If you have PVA on hand that is not of the best quality (stationery grade is sometimes too liquid, and construction grade is sold in oversized jars), then Grandfather’s old paste recipe will come to the rescue. It is cooked from flour or starch.

To make a paste from starch you will need: 2-3 tablespoons of any starch per liter of water. A small mug will be enough for the mask (recalculate the proportions taking into account your volume). The required amount of starch is diluted in a small amount cold water, stir until a homogeneous consistency and add boiling water to all the remaining water. Cook over low heat, stirring all the time, until thickened.

Proportions for flour paste: 1 cup per liter of water plus 50 grams of wood glue, previously diluted with water. Then do the same as with the starch paste - dilute the flour with cold water, add boiling water and cook.

Before you start making a papier-mâché mask, you need to put a scarf or hoop on your head so as not to stain your hair with your hands.

Without being too modest, you need to apply a thick layer of Vaseline (or cream) onto your face. We lay out the soaked newspaper (it is better to choose pieces with the least amount of printing) in the shape of the future mask.

The next layer is applied with the addition of glue. Each piece must be pressed well against the surface, increasing the adhesion of the layers and thereby squeezing out the air.

These pieces need to cover the entire surface evenly, leaving no gaps. In order not to get confused in the layers, you can mark them somehow or simply use a newspaper sheet from the inner tab, black and white, for the first layer, and take a color spread for the second.

After the first two layers of newspaper, add napkins.

Gradually alternate between napkins and newspaper. We collect up to five layers.

When the mask becomes thick enough, carefully and slowly begin to dry it with a hairdryer. If it doesn’t cause much discomfort, then you can just walk around for a while. homemade mask on the face, as with cosmetics.

The final step. The last layer, before the decorative one, is glued with either white writing paper or fabric, but not a bandage - it will spoil the final stage with its unsightly appearance. When the glue dries, you need to go over the joints of the pieces with your hand or a damp cloth to smooth out any nervousness.

Remove the well-dried mask and leave to dry at least overnight. On a radiator, at a good temperature, you can dry out the product, so it is better to place it near a heating device, and not directly on it. To ensure the integrity of the shape, you can place a fabric roller inside to prevent the mask from twisting.

After drying, we cut off all excess and trim the shape of the eyes.

This completes the master class on how to make the base for a mask.

Remained creative process decoration. To do this, fabric is stretched over the mask (it is advisable to choose from expensive pieces: velvet, velor, crepe-satin and other elastic materials that will not wrinkle).

In the eye area, holes are cut with an allowance for bending, if you do not plan to decorate the eye sockets (this option is possible, as with the fabric in the photo).

Glue the fabric to the base and glue the folds in the eye sockets and throughout the mask.

Instead of PVA, it is better to use special fabric glue or superglue.

We also glue the inner part with a fabric that is pleasant to the body. It's better if it's cotton. Before gluing the inner fabric, you should attach ties or elastic.

And then all that remains is to decorate with spectacular decor!
