Regular jeans can be turned into maternity pants in a few minutes. A tunic for expectant mothers is also sewn very quickly.

The content of the article:

During pregnancy, a woman should try to look beautiful, then she will be in a great mood, which will have a positive effect on the child. Clothes for expectant mothers should be comfortable. If you don’t want to buy new outfits while you’re expecting a baby, then you can quickly turn old ones into beautiful and comfortable things. You don't have to spend a lot of time at the sewing machine to do this. Many of the options for transforming things below are designed to take only 10-40 minutes of work.

How to quickly convert pants into maternity pants?

If the period is still short, then you can use the following method.

Take a regular hair tie, pass one side of it through the hole for fastening your jeans, and tie it here in the form of a loop. Now you will put the free end of the elastic on a button or button, thus improving the fastener.

The following maternity pants featured are very comfortable to wear. For them you will need:
  • trousers;
  • a small piece of knitwear;
  • threads;
  • needle or sewing machine;
  • scissors.
Cut 2 wedges in the form of a triangle on the trousers from the top from the waist down - on the right and left, attach them to the knitted fabric. Cut 2 of these pieces, leaving 8mm seam allowances. At the top, where the hem is on the waistband, the allowance should be 1.5 cm.

Sew the cut out knitwear parts in place of the ones cut out on the trousers - on the right and left.

You can sew almost the same option for pregnant women, or rather, remake old jeans. In this case, cut the wedges not at the sides, but at the top of the front pockets, and also replace these parts with knitted inserts.

The next option is ideal for last months pregnancy. Remove the waistband and zipper from the jeans and cut off the top front portion.

Now attach the jeans to the knitted fabric, you need to cut out 2 parts - the back and front yoke. The back one should be slightly above the waist, and the front one should be semicircular at the bottom. To create this line by attaching the jeans to the jersey, trace the bottom semi-circular part along the cut out piece. At the top of the yokes, leave 2 cm for the hem. If you want the jeans to stay tighter at the top, then leave 4 cm on the hem to fold this part of the fabric, stitch and insert a wide, loose elastic band.

To sew a trouser yoke, first sew the front and back sides together. Then turn the knitted piece inside out and fold it with the jeans, right sides together. Connect, topstitch, press the seam, and your maternity jeans are ready.

Outerwear for expectant mothers from my husband's T-shirt

If your significant other has a larger clothing size than you, then you can give your beloved man an unexpected surprise by turning his T-shirt into a tunic for yourself. This model does not require a pattern. All you need is:
  • t-shirt;
  • scissors;
  • chalk;
  • pins;
  • needle and thread;
  • sewing machine.
To create a tunic, you can use any other loose T-shirt.

Place it on the table with the front facing you, fold it in half. Deepen the neckline by making the semi-circular neckline deeper than it was before. Step back 5 cm from the edge, cut a ribbon of this width parallel to it.

In order for maternity tunics to fit well, you need to provide a fastener. In this model, a vertical incision is made on the top of the back, subsequently it is turned down and a button and eyelet are sewn on.

Gather the resulting cutout in front with a thread and a needle, then attach the previously cut U-shaped part and stitch it here.

To make a large sleeve more elegant, you can remake it in any of the two ways presented:
  1. For the first one, you need to turn the T-shirt inside out, draw a new line for the sleeve and top of the side, then stitch along the basting.
  2. If you use the second method, then rip out the sleeve completely and draw another, smaller size on it. Create a new line for the armhole and sides and stitch.
The photo demonstrates how sleeves are transformed using both methods for a maternity tunic.

You can decorate the edges of the sleeves with ruffles made from scraps of a T-shirt.

Fold the ribbon that we cut out earlier in half, wrap it around the neck of the T-shirt, and stitch it.

Decorate the yoke with buttons, after which the tunic is ready.

Lace maternity tunic

You don't need a pattern for this adorable pattern either. All you need:
  • lace fabric;
  • ready-made lace collar;
  • braid made of the same material and fabric.
Fold the lace fabric in half crosswise so that the front is slightly lower than the back. Place the collar in place, outline its upper part on the fabric, and cut it out.

To finish the neckline, sew a matching lace or jersey ribbon to the front of the neckline first. Then turn the stitching over to the other side and stitch from the inside of the maternity tunic.

To make a belt, simply twist the lace braid and ribbon, sew it in front, and tie it in the back.

You got such a wonderful new thing in just 30 minutes.

Tunic patterns for pregnant women

Similar maternity tunics can be made from other fabrics, thereby diversifying your wardrobe for the magical period of waiting for the baby.

The presented tunic pattern will help you easily sew a new outfit.

To create a new thing, you will need to take several measurements to find out:
  • neck girth;
  • length from shoulder to waist;
  • waist or hip circumference;
  • product length.
It is better to make the tunic loose so that it can be worn in the third trimester of pregnancy. The width of the product is adjusted by an elastic band inserted into the drawstring.

Take something from this:

  • large sheet of paper;
  • glued newspapers;
  • tracing paper;
  • graph paper.
Place a dot in the upper left corner, marking to the right an amount equal to a third of the half-circumference of the neck, plus 5 mm. Next, moving along a horizontal line, set aside 2-3 cm for piping the neckline. Then from the resulting point another 20 cm for the shoulder and sleeve.

From the shoulder down, set the length to the waist, draw a horizontal line. The drawstring for the elastic will be located in this place.

If you are pregnant, then the width of the future product is determined by the girth of the abdomen, do not forget to add an allowance for a loose fit. If the period is short, when the tunic pattern is drawn, the width of the product is determined by the circumference of the hips.

The back pattern is created on the same basis, but make the cutout for it small or do not make it at all. Now fold the fabric in half, pin the front pattern onto it, and the back pattern below. Outline, marking the waist line, cut with seam allowances of 8 mm on the side and 1.5 cm at the bottom.

Sew the front and back at the shoulder and side seams, and hem the hem. If you don’t know what this word means, hem it.

Cut out the neck facing from the fabric according to the markings on the pattern, and sew it in place. Sew the drawstring from the inside out, thread an elastic band through it, and sew it up. You now have another tunic garment.

Other patterns for pregnant women

To create such a new thing, you will need fabric 1 meter 40 cm wide. First, draw a pattern. The photo shows that the length from one sleeve to the other is 1 meter 20 cm. The width of the sleeve folded in half is 20 cm. Based on the hint, redraw the pattern onto paper, then onto the fabric. Cut with seam allowances.

Place the back and front with right sides facing each other, stitch at the shoulders, then along the sides and under the armpits. Finish the neck line by sewing bias tape, jersey tape, or a pre-cut facing here.

The low belt is 17 cm high and 92 cm wide. Open it up, sew the side parts together, and sew to the gathered bottom of the maternity tunic.

In the next model you can walk not only while expecting a child, but also at other times, for example, on a beach holiday.

The back and front consist of identical rectangles. But there is a V-shaped cutout at the neck of the shelf. It must be edged, the back and front parts must be sewn on the shoulders and sides, the product must be hemmed, after which the hand-sewn tunic is ready.

If you want your hands to be warm in such clothes, then pay attention to the following model.

It is also easy to sew for pregnant women or simply fashion-conscious women. The fabric is cut out to be 120 cm wide and 65 cm long. If you do not want to make unnecessary seams, then fold the fabric in half crosswise, mark down 65 cm, and sideways 120 cm, cut it out. Unfold the canvas. As you can see, your tunic turned out to be one-piece. It will only have two seams that separate the arms from the sides. Sew along the indicated basting, cut out and decorate the neck.

Outfit without preparation

Before you start buying fabric, you need to decide on the pattern itself.

The easiest option is to sew a simple dress without a pattern from a T-shirt:

  • To do this, just take a T-shirt or blouse for pregnant women the right size and cut it off under the breast;
  • then you will need a soft knit fabric measuring 1.5 x 1.32 meters. We cut the knitwear to the required length, fold it in half, stitch it, and hem it at the bottom;
  • we sew the resulting wide pipe along the entire length along the upper unhemmed line, tighten the threads, forming gathers;
  • As a result, the volume of the upper part of the skirt should coincide with the volume of the lower part of the T-shirt. All that remains is to sew the two parts together, and then tie a beautiful belt over the seam.

As in any business, before you start sewing for yourself, you need to evaluate your capabilities and weigh the pros and cons.

A DIY wardrobe has a number of advantages:

  • Individual measurements are taken to ensure a perfect fit.
  • The color, finish and style will fully match the taste of the owner.
  • Possibility of choosing high-quality fabric.
  • Budget savings.
  • A hobby can turn into a source of additional income.
  • Warm energy of the thing.

Disadvantages of self-tailoring:

  • Lengthy and painstaking process.
  • Risk of spoiling the material.

There are many more advantages to hand-made clothes than disadvantages. But before you start working in the hope of getting a high-quality exclusive item at a low price, you need to soberly assess your capabilities. If this is the first experience, then there is a risk of failure. Then you will either have to make considerable efforts during training, or abandon this idea. In the second case, the costs of clothes from the store will be added to those spent on materials.

If you have a strong desire to sew something out of clothes for yourself, even if you have no experience, you don’t need to give up this idea. If you make an effort and follow the instructions and advice, everything will work out.

What fabrics to choose for work?

Attention! When sewing the first things, it is better to avoid fabrics that are very stretchy, flowing and fraying heavily at the edges, such as chiffon, silk, supplex, terry, velor, thin knitwear.

The color of the chosen material also matters. It is easier to work with plain fabrics. If you choose checks, stripes or prints, you will have to match the pattern when cutting.

Modeling is a very complex and lengthy process. The result of all work depends on the correct taking of measurements and drawing. If it’s difficult to do this on your own, then you can start with finished pattern. There are many of them in various sewing magazines. Just choose the model you like and decide on the size.

As a rule, a woman knows well what number of clothes she wears, but to be sure, it is better to measure the main parameters with a centimeter tape and check them with the table in the magazine.

To translate a pattern from a magazine, you can use tracing paper. Be sure to draw not only the outline of the part, but also all the marks and symbols.

Another way to quickly create a pattern is to use old clothes, which fits well. It will have to be ripped apart, the parts ironed and the allowances trimmed. Then you need to model the abdominal area. This can be done by expanding the parts or cutting out additional inserts. There are other time-tested tricks to simplify the work of a seamstress:

  • Don't skimp on fabric. It is better to buy half a meter more in case of an error in cutting any part.
  • Choose a model according to your skills. This will protect you from the risk of spoiling the material and giving up sewing for a long time.
  • Explore the device and functions sewing machine before work, if necessary, lubricate it and adjust it.
  • Use threads and needles according to the type of fabric.
  • Adjust the length and width of the stitch, make test seams on a piece of fabric from which you plan to sew.
  • Before cutting, carry out wet-heat treatment of the material, especially natural fabrics. Then the finished product will not stretch or shrink after the first wash.
  • Carefully iron each seam as you work. This will be difficult to do on the finished product.

Nuances when sewing

Each piece of clothing has its own characteristics and sewing difficulties that must be taken into account when working.

Important: When sewing any item of clothing for pregnant women, it is better to choose natural fabrics that match the season.

Shirts, tunics and T-shirts

Sewing a maternity shirt is quite difficult. For this wardrobe item, you need to be able to work with darts, sew in sleeves, process cuffs, and sew buttonholes. If you have little experience, it is better to start with a tunic or T-shirt. They are sewn from knitwear.

The elastic fabric fits perfectly to the figure, so you can do without darts. If sewing on a sleeve is difficult, you can make it one-piece. A regular T-shirt pattern can be easily adapted for maternity use. It is enough to cut the parts from the bottom to the shoulder seam and add a few centimeters, widen the armhole and side seams.

Trousers and jeans from scratch and when altered from ordinary ones

Maternity trousers and jeans are often remade from worn ones. To do this, you just need to cut off the top part to the hip line, model a belly band from elastic fabric and connect the two parts together.

This option is suitable if a woman has not gained weight during pregnancy. In case old thing It’s become small, not only in the belly area you’ll have to sew new trousers. To do this, you need to build a pattern according to new standards. Sewing maternity pants is easier than regular ones. Instead of complex operations with darts, a belt, and sewing in a zipper, it is enough to cut out and sew on a bandage.

This video shows how to sew wide belt for a pregnant belly:

Skirts

The easiest piece of clothing to sew yourself is a skirt. For inexperienced needlewomen, a straight model made of thick knitwear is suitable. To perform it, it is enough to be able to build a rectangle and make a straight seam. It is more difficult to sew a skirt with an insert on the stomach.

Advice: Any model of maternity skirt should not be too short, since as the belly grows, it will creep up when worn.

Dresses

There are many models of dresses for pregnant women. They can be divided into groups:

Some of these models do not require a pattern or special sewing skills. If you choose a dress with sleeves and draperies, then you need to be able to work with facings, darts, and processing small details.

Features of knitted items

Some women refuse to knit during pregnancy due to superstitions. Whether to follow their example or not is a personal matter for everyone, but there is no medical justification for such prohibitions. If you want to knit something for yourself, then you don’t need to deny yourself this. This activity has many advantages:

As with everything else, knitting has its downsides:

  • This activity requires skill and patience.
  • Knitted items require special care.

Requirements for knitted tunics

  1. Knitted tunics for pregnant women should be made from natural threads, in accordance with the season. For summer items it can be cotton, for winter items it can be wool.
  2. It is better to knit with an elastic pattern to make your growing belly comfortable. Choose a length slightly lower than before pregnancy, as the tunic will stretch over your figure and become shorter.

If you want to sew or knit for yourself, you don’t need to be afraid of difficulties and lack of experience. An excellent compromise solution would be to purchase some of the things in the store and start your creativity with simple models. If it fails, this will not be a problem and will not cause much damage to the budget. And if everything works out, then the first thing will mark the beginning of a new hobby.

A woman's rapidly growing belly during pregnancy dictates the need to frequently update her wardrobe. Of course, modern stores offer a wide range of clothes for pregnant women. But it’s not always possible to find in them something that will really be comfortable, made from natural materials or, most importantly, affordable to the expectant mother. Do-it-yourself maternity clothes will be an excellent alternative to long shopping trips and hefty expenses for purchasing things. In this article I will tell you how to sew practical and comfortable clothes for the office yourself, friendly party and home rest for expectant mothers.

I happened to be pregnant four times. And my constitution is such that already from the third month I have been asked questions about interesting position. And from this time on, you have to change the basic items of your wardrobe and create clothes for the period of pregnancy with your own hands. And my pregnant friends, knowing about my sewing abilities, more than once turned to me for help in sewing clothes.

Sundress for the office - we sew it ourselves

I'm a working mom, so... maternity leave I needed comfortable clothes for all day. A trapeze sundress made of medium-density knitwear, knee-length, became the main thing in my wardrobe, which I happily wore to work while pregnant, complete with turtlenecks and blouses or without them.

Scheme of a simple sundress pattern for pregnant women:

The patterns are very easy to make yourself. The main measurement is chest circumference. In my case - 100 cm. If you have more or less, then where 25 cm is indicated on the pattern diagram, put ¼ of your bust circumference. We choose fabric for this garment with a width of at least 88 cm (43 cm x 2 + 2 cm for the side seam).

The length of the sundress is 96 cm - this is up to my knee. You choose this size yourself when creating clothes. And the fabric consumption for sewing will depend on this parameter. I needed two lengths 96x2 = 197 cm plus 3 cm for seams - shoulder and hem. In total, it took 2 meters to sew.

As for the armhole, your personal parameters and clothing preferences are also important here. Deepen it if necessary. You can also make the neckline deeper. Or, if desired, cut off the yoke along the chest line, make the lower part wider and add folds, for example, only along the front of the sundress. In a word, this simple pattern will help you in modeling and sewing your trapeze sundress.

I finished the armholes and neck of my sundress with bias tape. Or you can use an undercut facing that follows the shape of the neckline and armhole. Another option is to make a lined sundress. This preference in clothing remains yours.

How to create a dress for a party with your own hands

Sometimes celebrities give us interesting ideas while searching for an answer to the most popular women’s question: “What to wear?” But it should be remembered that clothes for pregnant women should not press on the stomach, be narrow or restrict movement.

Natalia Vodianova showed off in a trapeze dress during pregnancy. You can create something similar with your own hands using a pattern from my office sundress by choosing the appropriate fabric.

For my pregnant friend, the idea of a dress for a party was suggested by Angelina Jolie. Looking through photos Hollywood star, we found a cute and easy to sew item that is perfect for pregnant fashionistas.

The dress pattern for a friend looks like this:

The key measurement is chest girth or abdominal girth. When creating a pattern yourself, you need to focus on what is larger. A friend’s bust circumference is 104 cm, and her stomach is 125 cm. And the friend wanted the dress to be comfortable during pregnancy. On the pattern, the chest line is indicated by a dotted line, above which is the number 33. What does this mean? Along this line, the maximum width of the garment is 33 x 4 = 132 cm. Along the belly line – 160 cm. Theoretically, the finished dress will fit if the girth of the chest and abdomen is not greater. But this is if the clothes are close. With a belly circumference of 125 cm, the dress for a pregnant friend will be quite loose, as she wanted. If you need to reduce or increase the width, then just add or subtract the required number of centimeters in the center of the front and back of the pattern.

Pregnant Angelina's dress with a difference in length. My friend decided not to change this. According to our pattern, the front length is 100 cm, the back length is 120 cm.

Fabric consumption depends on the width and length of the garment. If we want to do without seams along the front and back, then we need a width of at least 55 + 55 = 110 cm plus at least 2 cm for the side seams, i.e. 112 cm. The cut is: 100 (front) + 120 (back) + 5 (bottom alignment and hemming) + 5 (neck hem) = 230 cm.

Neck with drawstring. You can thread a decorative cord or bow through it and tie it on the side or back. Or limit yourself to a thin strip of fabric from which the dress is made.

We sew our own tunic for the home

I choose clothes during pregnancy for the home no less carefully than for the office or a party. I believe that household items should combine both convenience and beauty. A tunic is ideal clothing for home, including a great option for pregnancy. Creating it with your own hands is also not difficult.

Pattern for sewing my tunic:

I sewed this model from cotton fabric with a border. Cotton is pleasant to the body, allows the skin to breathe, in a word, it is excellent for sewing clothes for pregnant women. The pattern shows that the front and back are cut the same way. The maximum chest circumference for a tunic according to this pattern is 52 x 2 = 104 cm. Do you want looser clothes? – Increase the width in the chest circumference. Also choose the length of the product to your taste.

The sleeve on the pattern is attached to the front-back, but it should be cut separately. There is a border along the bottom of my tunic and sleeves.

I need fabric at least 82 cm wide - front and back excluding sleeves, but with a seam allowance (100 - 22 + 2 + 2). For the front and back of this model you need 72 (maximum width) x 2 + 2 (for seams) = 146 cm. For the sleeves you need 80 x 2 + 2 = 162 cm. Fabric consumption for my tunic: 146 + 162 = 308 cm.

First, I sewed the sleeves along the cut line (as they are attached in the diagram) to the back and front. And then I sewed the side seams along with the sleeve seams. I made drawstrings along the neck and sleeves.

Here is a tunic for pregnant women, which is not difficult to make with your own hands, the result will be:

The tunic pattern can also be used to sew other maternity clothes, such as dresses.
