Firstly, first you need to determine which cell you got - uniform or not and find the cell report.

What is a report?

This is a repeating cell pattern. If a cell has a symmetrical report, it is uniform. If the report is asymmetrical, then the cell is uneven.

An example of a uniform cell. The check stripes are repeated in color and size in both directions. The report is highlighted from the beginning to the beginning of the repeating cell.

Why is it important to determine the cell report in the store?

The fact is that the cage requires adjustment of the pattern. And the adjustment takes place within one cell report. Therefore, to adjust the pattern, you need to take more fabric by at least one cell size. In complex products, for example, for a jacket, blouse, coat, raincoat, an additional 2-3 check reports will be required for adjustment. And the reports are different - from a few centimeters to half a meter in complex cells. This must be taken into account when choosing and purchasing fabric.

Why, for example, only one additional report is needed for a skirt, but two for a blouse? Because in most cases we lay out the skirt pattern on the fabric in one row, but for the blouse the sleeve details are laid out in the second row. This is where the additional cage report comes in handy for adjusting the parts.

As trivial as it may seem, it is best to take the pattern with you to the store and lay it out (at least approximately) on fabric, or take fabric with a good supply.

We have decided on the fabric consumption and the report too, now we start cutting. First, you need to make sure that when decatching you do not stretch the fabric with an iron, otherwise the pattern of the cage will inevitably shift.

Step 1

Fold the fabric in half, facing inward so that the cross sections of the fabric are aligned. It is not at all necessary that the edges coincide. It all depends on the pattern of the cell!

We cut off cross sections with pins along each bright strip of the cell. The more carefully you pierce a piece of fabric, the more accurate the cut will be.

My cage is uniform and large, in this version it’s good when the middle of the cage falls on the fold of the fabric. In a product with a whole back (front) it will look harmonious.

If the cell is small or uneven, then a fold of the fabric can be made along the edge of the cell.

We combine the cage along the edges and chop them off.

If you have a large piece of fabric, you can cut it in parts. By meter, for example. Cut the suit, first chop off a piece for the skirt and cut it out. Then you chop off the next part of the cut for the bodice of the jacket and so on...

But not all plaid fabrics can be folded in half for cutting. Large checkered (stripe) knitwear is cut in one layer. Why? Because the knitwear pattern, due to the peculiarities of its production, runs slightly in a spiral, with an offset. Therefore, it is impossible to fold the edges of the knitwear, matching the pattern without distorting the cut along the fold.

Large uneven cells are also best cut in one layer.

There is fabric that is already skewed; it is also cut in one layer. In this case, you need to make mirror parts of the pattern and glue them together. And then lay them out on the fabric in one layer, following the same rules for cutting the cage as for folded fabric.

Step 2

Before laying out the pattern pieces on the fabric, be sure to check if your plaid is even in length! If the length of the piece is asymmetrical, then you will have to lay all details patterns with the bottom in one direction! The same rule applies when cutting fabrics with pile, shine and fleece.

Step 3

There are fabrics that are not checkered, but with an insidious pattern, which has a so-called hidden check (stripe). These are fabrics with glen, chicken and houndstooth patterns.

Despite the small pattern, the pattern has rows both along and across. This row needs to be adjusted, just like the cage.

Here's another example of a hidden check in a geometric pattern that needs adjusting.

Even when choosing floral patterns, pay attention to the rows of the pattern. In a piece of fabric this is not noticeable. And in the seams of a skirt, the discrepancy between the rows of the pattern can be very noticeable.

Let's start with something simple - cut a skirt from checkered fabric.

First of all, we always lay the part with the fold.

The bottom of the skirt is not always perfectly straight, so it is better to lay the pattern so that the bottom is between the rows of the cage. Then a slight change in the hem of the skirt in height will not affect the pattern of the cage. The cage will not appear and disappear at the bottom.

Next we place the part that will connect to the first. The bottom of the sides of the first and second parts should match. Not the entire bottom of the skirt, but precisely at the seam point! So we lay out all the details of the skirt one by one. By combining them sequentially at the points of the bottom of the alignment seam. I only have two pieces, that’s why I combine them along one side seam.

If the cage is large, then the middle seam of the skirt should also be placed in the middle of the cage! This is important, otherwise there will be a pile of cages in the seam at the back.

A sleeveless dress is cut according to the same principle.

If the cage goes obliquely, then it should also match at the seams. For example, a flared skirt. In this case, its adjustment also occurs from the bottom up along the seams.

Let's complicate the task. We cut a sleeveless dress from checkered fabric, but with a cut-off waist.

When cutting the bodice, we focus on the skirt. First we lay the front part with the fold.
Then we alternately lay out the details of the barrel front, back and the back of the bodice itself. In the photo, the bottom of the parts is laid out along one line at point 1.

Point 2 - place the bodice back seam exactly along the same line in the middle of the cage as the skirt seam.

Point 3 - we move the details of the barrels to the sides along the lower cage so that their sides coincide with the cage on the sides of the skirt.

In this case, the checkered bodice and skirt will match perfectly.

But you can lay out the details of the barrels on the bias, the dress will be more decorative. In reliefs, the cage does not require alignment, but in the side seam, the side of the front and back must match. To do this, the bottom of the side seam of both parts must be placed on one square.

Step 6

We cut trousers from checkered fabric.

As in the skirt, we place the bottom of the side seams of the trousers one square at a time. The middle of the trouser legs should also be placed one square at a time. The lobes of all parts are always parallel to the cell!

In a large cage, one very important nuance should be taken into account. The middle seam of the front and back halves should be placed in the middle of the cage.

In this case, the cage in the seam will not be disturbed in width at the front and back; then there will be no pile-up of cage lines in the seam. This is clearly seen in the example.

Step 7

We cut a shirt (blouse) with sleeves from checkered fabric.

Point 1 - we combine the parts of the shelf and back not along the bottom, but along the side seams from the bottom.

Point 2 - combine the yoke with the back from the armhole. This will help match the check even if there is a crease along the back.

Point 3 - we move the shelf to the same square from which the yoke seam begins (if there is no yoke, then we also combine the squares in the shoulder seam). This will allow the check pattern to match not only horizontally, but also vertically at the shoulder seams and yoke seams.

You can put the yoke on the bias for decorative purposes. This will eliminate the overlap of the cage at the shelf and the back and highlight the yoke.

Point 4 - lay out the sleeve pattern so that the cells in the area of ​​the mark on the front armhole and along the front sleeve edge coincide. This will allow the cage to meet along the front of the sleeve almost to the shoulder. In the shoulder area, the cage can no longer match, because there is a rounding there.

The option is more complicated. Jacket with long two-seam sleeves. The photo clearly shows the combination of the cage on the sleeve and the shelf.

Point 1 - very important! If there is a middle seam along the back, then it needs to be placed between the cells.

Then the seam will look like this - the cell either converges or diverges along the seam. If you make a seam along the cage, then after stitching the cage will either disappear or appear in the area of ​​​​the shoulder blades and below the waist, and this is not very beautiful.

Point 2 - lay the bodice parts one after another, aligning them with the cage at the bottom of the seams. If there is a chest dart, then the cage matches in the seam from bottom to top only up to the dart!

Point 3 - move the front part horizontally until the cells from the edge of the shoulder seam, at the armhole, match. The back piece along the shoulder is a little wider and when the shoulder of the back is seated, the cage may bunch up towards the neck. But this failure will close the collar. But in the most visible place near the shoulder, the cage will be combined.

Point 4 - in the second row we lay the upper part of the sleeve so that the cage at the shoulder mark and the armhole of the front coincide.

Point 5 - now we lay the lower (elbow) part of the sleeve so that the cage matches the seam below.

Point 6 - all that remains is to lay the edging so that the cage matches at the bottom of both the shelf and the edging. Pay attention to the angle of the lapel! The cell in it must match.

One important point. You need to check the cage along the elbow seam. Place the elbow part of the sleeve so that the cage in the elbow seam does not duplicate vertically, that is, it is undesirable for it to get into the seam. It is better to place the elbow seam between the cells or next to it.

You need to attach the collar to the lapel and draw the cage markings on it, only then cut it out.

But it is better to cut out small checkered details after the first fitting, after adjusting the product to the figure and specifying the location of the pockets (leaf and flaps).

To do this, you need to pin parts from tracing paper onto the product on yourself, then draw a cage pattern on them and only then cut them out of fabric.
